 Rick's Writings

My move in March went well, as well as moving can be anyway; only broke one piece of furniture. It took me at least two full days to recover physically. I've always hated moving (I've move a lot!) but this time seemed the worst. Guess I'm getting old.

Now that I'm all settled in at my new place, Model-Train-Tips.com is moving. More details in Featured Projects below.

There have been a few tweaks and updates to the website. Read about them in What's New? below.

A big welcome to all of the new subscribers over the past few weeks.

 What's New?

Q & A
I've added a contact form to the Questions & Answers section:

There are a lot of questions and answers posted by other model railroaders. There are still a few unanswered questions, so if you have the answer let me know and I'll get it posted.

Links
I've expanded and organized the Links page. If you want to suggest any other helpful websites, please let me know.

Articles that have been posted since the last newsletter:

Model Railroad Track Plans

New Book Chronicles 75 Year History of the Twin City Model Railroad Museum

Model Railroad Electronics Provide Many Choices to Make Model Trains Perform Different Functions

Using Noch Ground Cover in Your Model Train Layout Scenery

C & G RR Layout Updates
Chuck Schutz has made more updates and enhancements to his C & G RR layout. He has sent me so many great pictures that I've added pages for each update:

Update 1

Update 2

He sent some more pictures last week, so I'll get them posted in a few days. Who knew you could do so much in so little space?

Sharing is Caring!
At the bottom of each article is a tool that allows you to share articles you like with others:

Sharing Is Caring!

If you hover your pointer over this tool, it will expand to show several icons. Each icon represents a social networking site or blogging related site. Example: the first icon is for Facebook; click on the Facebook icon and you can share the article on Facebook (assuming you use Facebook) with your friends.

There are icons for Twitter, MySpace, and many others. Feel free to play around with this, but let me know if you encounter any problems.

 Train Tips

Joao in Portugal emailed a question recently asking how to properly apply Noch ground cover (grass). I don't have any experience with this product so I did some reasearch.

Website Move
This week I am moving Model-Train-Tips.com to a new hosting service. My current hosting contract ends next week - and that's a good thing. Based on my experiences with other websites I manage, I anticipate quicker page load times with the new host.

I'm planning to make this switch Friday morning (Minnesota time) so everything should be back up at the new host by Friday afternoon. If you have any problems accessing the site, just check back later in the day.

Thank you in advance for your patience during this move.

Newsletter Format
I'll be making some changes to the newsletter format next week. I haven't finalized it yet, but it'll be a little bit less personable but more frequent.

One of the reasons I don't get the newsletter out as often as I'd like is because I have to put a lot of time into creating each one. It was my original intent to write a personable newsletter, but it was also my intent to get one out every couple of weeks. With my hectic schedule, the end result has been too few newsletters.

The new format will be structured to automatically go out every Thursday if there have been any updates made to the website during the previous seven days. Each newsletter will have excerpts of recently added articles, etc.

My goal with this change is to provide more information in a timely manner. I'd like to hear back from you about this change as well as any ideas you might have.

Thanks
Rick
